SHOKZ HEADPHONES
SHOKZ (formerly Aftershokz) offer a great solution for children with microtia and atresia.
These bone conduction headphones are designed to transmit sound via bone conduction, leaving the ears open to environmental sounds. They are popular amongst bike riders and runners for this reason, but also work well for children and adults with atresia who need to use headphones and rely on bone conduction to access sound.
They work well for microtia and atresia patients who need to use headphones for school, online learning, gaming, listening to music or while exercising. For people with unilateral atresia, they can also place an ear plug in their hearing ear to block background noise if desired.
There are several models available, but the OpenRun PRO Mini is a smaller size, which may be better suited to children with atresia.
Bone conduction headphones can be claimed as a consumable through your child’s NDIS plan. You can purchase up front or request an invoice. If you have a self-managed plan you can purchase and be reimbursed through the myplace portal. For plan-managed families, please request and invoice below and we will invoice your plan-manager on your behalf.
